Born 12 November 1938 in rural Covington County, Mississippi.

Enlisted in the U.S. Navy 5 June 1956 as High School Hospital Recruit. (HSHR)

Received Recruit Training at NRTC, San Diego, California. Upon completion of Basic Training, assigned to TAD at Naval Station, San Diego, awaiting Hospital Corpsman Class A School.

1956-1957
Received lifelong training in Naval personnel snaffus while enduring seven transfers between Naval Station San Diego, Naval Hospital San Diego and Naval Hospital Corps School during a four month period.

Promoted to HN upon completion of Hospital Corpsman School. Assigned to Field Medical Service School at Camp Pendleton, California where training in the art of First Aid, throwing hand grenades, firing, field stripping and reassembling rifles and pistols and military behavior were taught.

1957-1958
Tour of duty (18 months) with 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division FHF in Japan, Philippines and Okinawa. Advanced to HM3.

1958-1959
Attended Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank Technic School (14 month): USNH Bremerton, Washington. Advanced to HM2 1959.

1960
Six months at Naval CB Center, Port Huenema, California.
