Senior Chief Turskey enlisted in the U.S. Navy 24 Oct 1950 and attended Cooks and Bakers School after Boot Camp. His first duty station was the Galley at NAS Alameda. FTCS(SS) Turskey went to sea in 1953 on USS GUADALUPE (AO 32).

In 1955 he began the "Senior Program Conversion" to Firecontrolman, graduating in 1956 and going back to sea on USS PLATTE (AO 24). In 1957 he went ashore for a tour of duty with the Long Beach Group Pacific Reserve Fleet until 1959 when he transferred to USS SKAGIT (AKA 105).

In 1960 Senior Chief Turskey attended Sub School and then qualified on USS CATFISH (SS 339). In 1961 he attended "C" School at Great Lakes and then went on to serve on USS BLUEBACK (SS 581). In 1962 he transferred to the pre-commissioning crew of USS BARB (SSN 596) at the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, MS.

In 1965 he transferred to FltSubTraFac (temporary medical dis-qual) until reporting aboard USS SARGO (SSN583) as Chief of the Boat, relieving RMCM(SS) Dale McCord. In 1968 he transferred to USS HADDOCK (SSN 621) conducting a WESTPAC deployment. He transferred to the Fleet Reserve from USS SPERRY (AS 12) on 15 May 1970.
