Reported to Mare Island Naval Shipyard to be a member of the recommissioning crew of
USS HAMMERHEAD (SS 364) homeported in San Diego,
CA. Assigned as Supply Officer and then Engineer Officer. Operated out of San Diego
as a target for sonar school ships.

Rreported to U.S. Atomic Energy Commission staff at Westinghouse Atomic Power
Division, Bettis Field, PA (near Pittsburgh) for instruction in nuclear power
matters.

Reported to U.S. Atomic Energy Commission staff at the U.S. Naval Test Facility
at Arco, ID, for duty as chief operator of the Submarine Thermal Reactor, Mark I
operated for the USAEC by Washington APD. Qualified as a chief operator in two
weeks to operate the NAUTILUS prototype during testing.

Reported aboard USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571)
homeport New London, CT. Assigned first as Auxiliary Division Officer. Qualified as
Officer of the Deck and Diving Officer immediately and as an Engineering Officer of
the Watch within two weeks. After each three months period, reassigned successively
as Electrical Division, Reactor Controls Division, and Main Propulsion Assistant
(Machinery Division Officer).

Assigned as Engineer Officer, USS NAUTILUS
(SSN 571). Served aboard during the 1957 Arctic under-ice exploratory probes
and the 1958 Pacific to Atlantic passage reaching the North Pole on August 3, 1958,
the first ship to ever do so. The ship was awarded the first peacetime Presidential
Unit Citation by President Eisenhower.

HALIBUT (SSGN 587) at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as Executive Officer and
Navigator. Served aboard during sea trials, intial Regulus cruise missile launches
off Hawaii, and shakedown cruise to New Zealand and Australia.

Assigned to the staff of Commander Submarine Squadron ONE as Squadron Engineer for
the four diesel-powered Regulus missile submarines.

Assigned for three-months temporary duty under instruction at the Naval Reactors

Commanding Officer. Made two Western Pacific deployments. Awarded a Legion of Merit
and the ship awarded a Navy Unit Commendation, the

Virginia, and subsequently at Key West Sonar School.

Reported to pre-commissioning detail for USS
JOHN ADAMS (SSBN 620) at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine as Commanding
Officer Gold Crew. Temporarily assigned to Staff, Commander Submarine Flotilla TWO,
New London, Connecticut, to review all operational procedures involving nuclear
submarine sea trials following the loss of the
USS THRESHER (SSN 593). Upon commissioning
the ship's homeport was assigned at Charleston, South Carolina. Was in command during
the shakedown cruise and six deterrent patrols out of both Holy Lock, Scotland, and
Rota, Spain. Launched two test ballistic missiles during shakedown and two during
readiness test.

Assigned to the staff of Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Established the Nuclear
Propulsion Examining Board as the first Senior Member. Conducted 57 submarine
reactor safety examinations. Awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.

Assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, DC.
|

| June | 1971 |
Reported as Commander, Submarine Squadron FOURTEEN, at Holy Loch, Scotland. During
the transition from Polaris to Poseidon missiles, had 14 different submarines
assigned for readiness. Awarded second Meritorious Service Medal. Promoted to Rear
Admiral.

Reported as Commander, Submarine Flotilla TWO, New London, Connecticut where 25
nuclear submarines in three squadrons were supported, 20 other nuclear submarine
crews were trained, and the Submarine School is located. Name soon changed to
Submarine Group TWO.

Assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, DC, as Director,
Ocean Surveillance Division (OP 955).

Joined the New York Power Authority as Assistant Chief Engineer. In over 11 years
Admiral Early was responsible for the management of several large construction
projects and became a Senior Vice President. The New York State Senate and the
State Assembly both passed resolutions honoring him in 1988 upon his retirement.

Began consulting as an independent contractor. Had various assignments with the
Department of Energy, Department of Energy Contractors, and the Long Island Power
Authority.

Married Violet in 1948. Son, Brian born while at Submarine School. Daughter, Susan,
born in San Diego, married a submariner in 1974. Have one grandson.
