On 19 Sep 1969 USS SARGO deployed on a WESTPAC deployment. HMC(SS) R.L. Cutlip and CDR Highfill were awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for their performance during the April – May extended operations. In October, 1969 USS SARGO arrived at Buckner Bay, Okinawa for a port visit then proceeded to Yokosuka, Japan for a two-week upkeep. The USS SARGO finished the year on an extended training cruise in the Pacific.

In January the USS SARGO arrived at Subic Bay, Philippines for an upkeep, then conducted operations with British and Australian units in the South China Sea. In February USS SARGO arrived at HMS Terror, Singapore Island for a week visit, proceeded to Hong Kong via the Equator for a week visit, then she commenced a transit to Pearl Harbor, arriving in March.
