In April 1968 USS SARGO left the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard after a two-year overhaul.

In June 1968 USS SARGO deployed for a two-month extended cruise in the Western Pacific. During this deployment the ship crossed the equator and held a “Shellback” ceremony for the uninitiated.

During the deployment the boat published its own newspaper "The SKUPE." The following copies of The SKUPE were provided by Joseph Harris, ETC(SS)(1967 - 1970) and courtesy of CAPT George Vahsen (1965 - 1968), check them out!

CHANGE OF COMMAND

CDR Kenneth L. Highfill The Vahsens at the Change of Command Ceremony

On 16 Sep 1968 CDR Kenneth L. Highfill relieved CDR George M. Vahsen as Commanding Officer. The Change of Command Ceremony was conducted outboard USS HALIBUT (SSN 587) shown in the photo below.

From October to November 1968 USS SARGO conducted a port visit to San Francisco, CA and participated in sound survey operations at Dabob Bay, WA and then returned to Pearl Harbor.

Following the USS SARGO’s return to Pearl Harbor she conducted an upkeep and local operations in the Pearl Harbor area.
