During January the ship enjoyed a holiday standdown period followed by local operations out of Pearl Harbor and ending the month in an upkeep period at Pearl Harbor.

In February USS SARGO completed the upkeep period and participated in RIMPAC 77, ending in March. Following RIMPAC 77 the ship completed another upkeep and conducted local operations out of Pearl Harbor.

During April and May USS SARGO conducted Inport Type Training, successfully passing an Operational Reactor Safeguards Examination on 08 April 1977. USS SARGO continued local operations out of Pearl Harbor and conducted a Pre-Deployment Upkeep at Pearl Harbor, HI.

On 02 June 1977 USS SARGO deployed to the Western Pacific, visiting Pusan, Korea and conducting an extended training cruise.

The USS SARGO completed the extended training cruise in August, 1977, and conducted an upkeep at Guam, before visiting Subic Bay, Philippines in September.

In October USS SARGO conducted emergency repairs at Guam and emergency voyage repairs at Yokosuka, Japan. USS SARGO then conducted an extended training cruise, followed by a port visit at Chin Hae, Korea.

In November, USS SARGO visited Hong Kong, B.C. and Subic Bay, Philippines followed by a transit back to Pearl Harbor, HI, returning from deployment on 29 November 1977.

The USS SARGO spent December in a ship’s standdown period.

For service on SARGO: ETC(SS) Floyd H. Chilcoat received a COMSUBPAC Letter of Commendation; QM1(SS) James F. Darrow and EM1(SS) Richard G. Kelbon received COMSUBRON ONE Letters of Commendation.
