The USS SARGO spent January, 1980 conducting dockside Pre-Overhaul Testing and inport Training.

During February USS SARGO conducted a sonar exercise with USS PUFFER (SSN 652) and provided services for USS BARB (SSN 596) for an evaluation of the AN/BQG-4, in local Hawaiian waters.

In March USS SARGO participated in RIMPAC 80, during which USS SARGO was credited with 118,000 tons of shipping sunk, a total greater than that scored by any other unit. The USS SARGO also continued the evaluation of the AN/BQG-4 with USS BARB (SSN 596).

USS SARGO conducted an upkeep at Pearl Harbor, HI and sea trials in the Pearl Harbor area.

In May the USS SARGO visited Nawiliwili, Kauai. USS SARGO also completed its MK48 certification, provided services for USS OMAHA (SSN 692), and conducted a dependents cruise. The USS SARGO ended May by commencing a Pre-Overhaul Upkeep.

On 14 June 1980 USS SARGO entered Dry Dock No. 2 at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for a refueling overhaul.

"For professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties while serving aboard USS SARGO (SSN 583) from 14 Jun to 27 Sep 1980" MM2(SS) Jerry Alan Houston was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal.
